How do You See the Future of Northwest Indiana?

What industries should the Region court to diversify the economy? Should it focus more on revitalizing downtowns, redeveloping brownfield sites or both? Is it important to improve the perception of Northwest Indiana by outsiders or its own residents?

La Porte County Office of Economic Development will have copies of the 2017 Annual Report available for all in attendance. Check-in begins at 11am. Over 8,700 jobs are currently available in the state's northwestern region. On Thursday, March 22, 2018, Next Level Jobs will host an open house in nearby Hobart, Indiana to help level up employees for those jobs. Ivy Tech Community College, Vincennes University, Department of Workforce Development and Commission for Higher Education representatives will be available to answer questions on how to level up.

Employers can apply for the Employer Training Grant (up to $25,000 per employer) and employees can apply for the Workforce Ready Grant through Next Level Jobs. Both grants are designed to skill up workers interesting in securing high-demand jobs in priority industry sectors. Priority sectors include advanced manufacturing, IT/business services, transportation and logistics, health sciences, building and construction, and agriculture. Representatives from the Department of Workforce Development and the Commission for Higher Education will be available to answer questions on both grants during discussion and one-on-one sessions.

Launched in August 2017, Next Level Jobs is part of Governor Holcomb's Next Level agenda to continue positive economic growth in Indiana. Next Level Jobs focuses on providing additional training for Hoosiers to compete in the workforce. The Governor's Office has partnered with the Department of Workforce Development and the Commission for Higher Education on the initiative.

On Tuesday, February 27, 2018, NIPSCO announced nearly $6 million electric system upgrades to be constructed in Kingsbury Industrial Park. The project is expected to be completed in December 2018. These upgrades include approximately 15 miles of overhead electric transmission and distribution lines, and 395 wooden poles along 5^th Line Road. These infrastructure improvements will modernize the natural gas and electrical system to maintain safety and reliability in the future. The continued improvement to Kingsbury Industrial Park provides more opportunities for future development, as well as strengthens current businesses and industries.

NIPSCO expects minimal service interruptions during the work and will notify customers if a planned outage is needed. All work will occur between Monday and Friday during normal business hours. NIPSCO will contact property owners regarding obstructions in utility easements, such as fences and landscaping, that present a challenge for construction.
